A half hitch tool is very simple to use – it’s even easier in use than the finisher (a whip finish tool). We use it to tie knots for flies which heads are made from fur – so-called Muddlers – and also for flies rich in hackles.

I discovered this way of tying off my flys myself using empty pen tubes of various types.
If you make two or even three revolutions of the thread on you half hitch tool rather than one you form a more secure knot and only add a few seconds to the time. Once the head is knotted this way, I gently pull on the thread to further tighten the knot. I usually pull to break the thread. A coat of Sally Hansen on the finished head makes it very secure.
Three loops on the half hitch tool is stronger than three single loop knots.
